The good breeder

Recently, a friend of mine asked for advice about buying a Chihuahua puppy. At Pom Royale we only breed FCI Pomeranians, but as a breeder I know the challenges of finding a responsible source for any breed, including Pomeranians! That conversation inspired me to write this article, because the principles of choosing the right breeder are the same, no matter which breed you’re looking for.

“So how DO YOU know you’re choosing the right breeder?”

Future owners usually know which size, colour, or sex puppy they want, and then their main priority becomes finding the “cheapest” version of that combination. But how much does a well-bred, purebred puppy actually cost?. In this link we explain what goes into pricing.

Far too often, future puppy owners focus only on colour, sex, or what seems like a “good deal, based on an online search” But a Pomeranian is not a handbag or a pair of shoes; it’s a living being who will share your life for the next 12–15 years.

Why Price Isn’t the Right Starting Point

A quick Google search for “Pomeranian puppies for sale” will show you hundreds of results, often on classified ad sites like Marktplaats, Tweedehands, MundoAnimalia or Milanuncios to name but a few. But here’s a truth we can tell you with certainty: no responsible breeder will be advertising their puppies on those platforms.

Good breeders do not “sell to the highest bidder, at the lowest price” We raise and place puppies with care, and the families we choose matter just as much as the homes they go to.

Where to Look Instead

If you want a well-bred, healthy puppy, start your search in the right places:

  • Word of mouth – speak to trusted owners who are happy with their dogs.
  • Dog shows – meet breeders in person, and see the quality of their adults in the ring.
  • Breed-dedicated Facebook groups – communities that protect the breed can point you in the right direction.
  • The FCI website of your country – a reliable source of registered breeders.
  • National Pomeranian clubs – where serious breeders are members.

What Matters More Than Puppy Photos

At Pom Royale, we often remind people: all puppies are cute. To the untrained eye, a top-quality Pomeranian and a poor-quality one may look similar at 8 weeks old. The real indicator of quality is the adults. Puppies should grow up to look like their parents which is why we encourage all potential owners to study the sires and dams behind a kennel’s program.

Sadly, many buyers chase labels like “micro,” “toy,” or “teddy bear face.” These are marketing gimmicks, not breed standards. You can read more about these gimmicks here.

What are the hallmarks of a good breeder?

  • Do they have a professional website and educational articles about the breed?
  • Can you find genuine testimonials from past owners?
  • Do they respond promptly and openly to questions?
  • Do they show consistency in their breeding goals, ie: health, type, and character?

If a breeder takes weeks to answer simple questions, how responsive will they be when you need advice with your puppy? At Pom Royale, we make it clear: our responsibility doesn’t end when a puppy leaves our home.

The Pom Royale Difference

We raise every puppy with Puppy Culture, the gold standard in early development. We carefully plan each litter, choosing parents who are health-tested, FCI registered, and who truly represent the Pomeranian in beauty and character.

When you choose a Pom Royale puppy, you aren’t just buying a pet, you’re gaining a partner for life. We want to be the first person you call if you ever need guidance. That lifetime of support is included in the price of your puppy.

Because for us, breeding is not a transaction.

It’s a lifelong commitment to every puppy we raise, and every family we trust them with.
